To start, toss the apple slices with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and a dash of salt. Spread the apples in an even layer into a lightly greased 8″x8″ baking pan.
In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in the cold diced butter with a pastry cutter until it comes together in a crumb-like mixture. Mix in the old-fashioned whole rolled oats. Spread the oat mixture on top of the apples in the baking pan.
Bake for around 35 minutes. the top will be golden brown and the filling will be bubbling on the sides. Let the Apple Crisp sit for about 5 minutes before serving and topping with vanilla ice cream!
Some ingredients notes
Apples – Use a mix of sweet and tart apples. Honeycrisp and Granny Smith are my favorites to use.
Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Allspice – These are my go-to spices, but feel free to use whatever spices you like or have on hand.
Tips
- Cut the apples into slices that are about 1/4 – 1/2 inches.
- When the crisp is done, the apple slices will be tender when you poke them with a fork.
- Top with ice cream!
